Doctors

Rod Batten

Rod has worked at Unanderra Veterinary Hospital since 1984 been the proprietor since 1988. He graduated from The University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science in 1983 entering the varied world of mixed practice in Dapto. Despite his rural upbringing Rod has chosen to give all his time and experience to family pets. Rod’s veterinary interests are broad however he has recently become particularly interested in dermatology. He is married to Kym, has three grown children and and one Cavoodle, Finn and numerous canine and feline visitors requiring overnight care

Leisa Smith

Leisa has been a veterinarian at Unanderra Vet Hospital since 2006. Leisa graduated from The University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science with honours in 2005, and, after working in Tasmania for one year came back to her home in the Illawarra. Leisa is developing advanced surgical skills and is our senior associate. She has three dogs, two daughters a husband and a very busy life.

Leah Slater

Leah has been a veterinarian at Unanderra Vet Hospital since 2015. Leah comes from Canada originally and has completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from Otago University in New Zealand in 2008, as well as a Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree from The University of Sydney in 2014. Leah has one cat, Frankie, and is a regular foster carer for orphan kittens which makes her our go to person for feline medicine!

Nurses

Kayt Saltalamacchia

Kayt is our senior nurse and has been a at Unanderra Vet Clinic since 2008 although through her families pets has a lifelong association. She completed her certificate 4 in vet nursing at Yallah TAFE in 2010. Kayt is from Wollongong and has two dogs, Chelsea and Zoe, and recently added a baby, Lucas. Kayt does some dog grooming on the side and has wide knowledge of our over the counter products.

Melinda McKeown

Melinda has been a veterinary nurse at Unanderra Vet Clinic since 2013. Mel completed her certificate 4 in vet nursing at Yallah TAFE in 2013 and is originally from Sutherland Shire. Mel has a rehomed greyhound, Abbi ; two bunnies, Pocket and Misty; one bearded dragon, Blaze; two chickens, Coco and Shimmer and one horse, Zulu. Mel’s daughter India can also be found helping out on Saturdays.

Emma Randall

Emma has been a veterinary nurse at Unanderra Vet Hospital since 2017 after completing her certificate 4 in vet nursing at Yallah TAFE in 2015. Emma is very effective at calming a nervous patient with her calm gentle handling. Emma has one dog, Baxter, and is from Wollongong.

Kym Batten

Kym has been associated with Unanderra Veterinary Hospital for the last 35 years both through her marriage to Rod and working as a receptionist/practice manager. Kym is a devoted runner and wonders how far her cavoodle Finn could run before he tired!
